Why Are Kittens Born Blue Eyed?

Cats whose eyes produce high melanin levels have darker eye colors compared to those with lower pigmentation levels. For instance, a cat whose eyes are green has fewer melanocyte levels compared to one with copper eyes.

Should I Worry If My Cat Eyes Remain Blue?

Blue-eyed cats don’t have pigmentation or melanocytes.

Some cats’ eyes will remain blue even as they age which shouldn’t be a cause for alarm. If you notice your cat’s eyes are still blue at eight weeks, they’ll probably remain blue past adulthood.

However, if your adult cat’s eyes suddenly change color, you should have them checked by a cat’s vet as this could be a sign of a health issue such as conjunctivitis, glaucoma, inflammation, feline leukemia, or uveitis.

Also if your adult cat’s eyes color revert to a blue color you should take her to the vet immediately as this could be a sign of blindness.

Factors That Determine the Color of Your Cat’s Eyes

In addition to the levels of melanin present in your cat’s eyes, other factors that may determine their eye color include:

• Breed – Some cat breeds have similar eye colors. For instance, Siamese and Himalayans often have blue eyes. Also, cat breeds with white coats often tend to have blue eyes
• Genetics – If you have a mother cat with dark eyes you might notice that her kittens end up having deep colored eyes
• Light absorption and reflection – The reflection or absorption of light from your furball’s eyes can affect the appearance of her eye color. Similarly, the amount of light in the environment also determines the appearance of your cat’s eyes.

Notably, a cat’s eye color is rarely linked to her coat color. The reason, the genes responsible for fur and eye colors are totally different. This explains why dark-furred furballs might have light-colored eyes.

Common Cat Eye Colors

#1 Blue

How Cats Get Their Eye Color?

There are two major factors that determine a cats eye color: iris pigmentation and blue refraction.

The pigmentation of the iris is caused by melanin and the color ranges from lemon yellow to hazel to deep orange or brown. In addition to this, the “transparent” structures of a cat’s eyes absorb and refract light much like a sheet of glass. Viewed head on the glass appears colorless but viewed edge-on it is greenish or bluish.

Just like glass, the transparent structures in cats’ eyes are transparent blue, ranging from practically colorless to deeper blues and violet-hued blues.

Rare Eye Colors For Cats

The type of color and the intensity and rarity depends on the number of melanocytes in the eye and how active they are. If there are no melanocytes, the eye appears blue. A low number of melanocytes gives green. A high number of melanocytes gives orange.

A second factor is how much pigment those melanocytes produce. Those that produce less pigment give a lighter shade, while those that are more active and produce a lot of pigment give the deeper shades. Basically, eyes with a low number of melanocytes can range from pale green to strong green.

Similarly, the yellows range from light amber to deep copper. The activity levels of melanocytes are genetically determined so it is possible to selectively breed for either deeper or paler eye colors. The way that light passes through the various blue-tinted structures gives us the final visible color.

1. Blue Eyes

If your cat does not receive a lot of melanin to its iris, it will end up with blue eyes. Although a correlation between a cat’s fur and eye color has yet to be scientifically proven, cats with blue eyes usually have white or very light fur color.

Kittens are born with blue eyes but that does not mean they will stay blue. In some breeds, the blue color is permanent, but in most it will be replaced by another color starting around 6 weeks old. The blue color depends on the intensity of blue refraction. Blue isn’t the rarest eye color and is fairly more prominent in certain breeds of cats.

For example, the Himalayan cat and the Snowshoe cat breed have blue eyes. Cats with white fur and blue eyes should not be confused with albino cats that have no melanin levels.

2. Green Eyes

The green of a cat’s eyes can vary from a green with yellow undertones to a green mixed in with shades of blue. It is also sometimes possible to see flecks of gold or yellow within the iris of a cat with green eyes.

Shades of green are not as rare as hazel eyes in cats, or blue but one of the more rare colors except in certain breeds.

Green eyes can be found in breeds like the Egyptian Mau, Havana cats, and Norwegian Forest Cats which can have eyes in a range of shades of green. Russian Blue cats may also have vivid green eyes.

3. Hazel Eyes

Hazel eyes are a blend of green and golden yellow. While this striking hue is usually rare in house cats, it is not at all uncommon in their wild cat cousins.

This is the eye color of most wild cats in temperate regions, including Lynx and Bobcats. It’s also a common eye color in feral cats. But this is one of the rare eye colors for domestic cats to have.

Breeds that can have hazel eyes include the Abyssinian, Bengal, Singapura, Cornish Rex, and the Scottish Fold.

4. Brown/Copper Eyes

Cats with brown eyes do not actually have brown eyes but more likely they have copper eyes. A darker shade of copper tends to happen when there is a lot of melanin in your cat’s irises.

This color is considered very rare and unusual.

Copper is an eye color that can be seen in many breeds, such as the Persian, the Chartreux and the Cornish Rex.

5. Yellow Eyes

The color yellow on the cat’s eye will depend on the hue intensity. It can range from a very pale-yellow lemon color to a more vivid color. However, it should be kept in mind that color overlaps are also possible. For example, there can be an overlap between the yellows and browns, as it is with yellows and greens.

This is probably the most common eye color that you can find in cats.

Yellow eye colors can be encountered in breeds such as the British Shorthair, the Norwegian Forest Cat, and the Bombay.

6. Orange/Amber Eyes

The orange eye color can be seen in specific breeds, and that is because British breeders used this feature for mating in their catteries.

A pure orange-eyed cat might be hard to find, but some that have flecks of yellow in their orange irises or those that have a ring of yellow outside their orange irises are more common. This is one of the rarest eye colors found on cats.

This eye color can be seen in breeds such as the Devon Rex, Maine Coon, Turkish Van and Japanese Bobtail.

Cats With Different Colored Eyes

The technical term for odd-colored eyes is heterochromia iridium, which refers to the fact that each iris is a different color. This can be inherited, congenital or the cause of an accident or injury.

Odd-colored eyes are most often seen in white cats with the epistatic gene. Usually, one eye will be blue and the other green, hazel, yellow, or orange. This type of color eyes are highly rare.

Odd-colored eyes are popular in particular breeds, including the Turkish Van, Japanese Bobtail, Persian, and Sphynx cats.

7. Dichromatic Eyes

Did you know that there are cats with two different colored eyes? Dichromatic is used to describe when there are two colors in one eye. This could manifest as a “pie slice” or a colored ring about the pupil.

If both of a cat’s eyes are dichromatic, they may be a mirror image of each other. This is the rarest eye color type.

What About Pink Eyes?

Pink is not a standard eye color in cats. It is found in pink-eyed albinos and is due to a complete lack of pigment in the eye combined with very little blue refraction. True albinos entirely lack melanin and the iris is pale pinkish-white. The eyes usually have a bluish hue, resulting in a blue-eyed albino. Very rarely the transparent structures are colorless and pink-eyed albino results.

#1 Cheetoh

This particular cat is a crossbreed of two other crossbreeds, the Ocicat and Bengal. This experimental breed is very new and it was created in 2001. The Cheetoh cat has a menacing appearance, with much larger ears than your average house cat, as well as a much stronger jaw.

The muzzles on this breed is broader than the Bengal or Ocicat, and similar to a Cheetah or a Tiger. Cheetoh cats also have big, almond-shaped eyes, which are bright and expressive.

Through some fluke of nature, the Cheetoh Cat is bigger than either of its parent breeds (the Ocicat or the Bengal). This large feline weighs between 15 and 25 pounds on average, and they are pretty much all muscle

#2 Ashera

The Ashera is an entirely new hybrid breed of cat. It is said to be a mix between an African wild cat and an Asian leopard with a hint of domestic cat mixed in. The Ashera is the most expensive cat in the world because it’s extremely rare. A Los Angeles-based firm produces only five of these breeds every year.

This feline has long legs, large pointed ears, and striking leopard spots on its cream or tawny coat. This dog-like cat is very loyal, affectionate, energetic, and intelligent.

The Ashera cat is sought after because it is such a large cat and can live up to 20 years. It can grow to be almost five feet long and weigh between 26 and 33 pounds.

#3 Savannah

The beautiful Savannah cat is an exotic cross of the wild African Serval and domestic Persian cat. The Savannah is one of the largest domesticated cat breeds, having been documented in the Guinness Book of World record as the world’s tallest domestic cat.

This breed is intelligent, energetic, curious, and highly loyal. This cat has long legs, huge ears, and a vibrant coat that ranges from golden to smoke.

Even though your Savannah may not like strangers, she will probably be your dog’s best friend.  Savannahs are also known for their strength and excellent jumping skills. This feline weighs between 9 and 22 pounds and can live for up to 20 years.

#4 Toyger cat

The Toyger cat is a cross of the Bengal and Domestic Short-Haired cat.  Their wild looks come from crossing a Bengal with a striped Domestic Shorthair. This breed is 0% wild and 100% domestic.

With his orange and black or brown striped coat and muscular body, it’s easy to mistake the Toyger for a real tiger cub. As its name suggests, this cat has many tiger-like features, including its short front legs, elongated toes, and enhanced night vision. This cats long and beautiful body is characterized by rosettes and tabby patterns, just like those of a small tiger.

Thankfully, the breed is much more tame than a tiger cub and tends to be sweet, calm and friendly. This beautiful cat weighs between 10 and 15 pounds and has a lifespan of 13 and 15 years.

#5 Bengal

The Bengal cat is an excellent family pet as it’s friendly, loyal, smart, and can be easily trained. This feline is a hybrid of the wild Asian leopard cat and a Domestic Shorthaired cat.

Bengals have stunning coats that come in many striking patterns like rosettes, spots or even marbled, which is one or more colors swirl into his coat’s background color. They have large round paws, broad heads, muscularly built, and wild-looking spotted coats. This breed is also affectionate, social, and very energetic.

Bengals are rare because their male generations are infertile, and it takes up to four generations for a cat to be recognized as a Bengal. This breed can live for 12 to 16 years and weighs around 15 pounds on average.

#6 Abyssinian Cat

Abyssinian cats have a little more of a lion presence to them and less leopard-like. How the Abyssinian cat first arose as a pet is still a mystery. Many think they arose from an unbroken line dating back to small wild cats that roamed the streets of ancient Egypt.

They often have dark patches on their forehead which, in part, gives them this lion-like quality and do not have spots or stripes like a tabby cat. They are beautiful cats with an elegant skeletal structure and a regal demeanor.

Abyssinian cats are very playful, intelligent and love to cuddle. They are great companion pets and will develop a strong bond with their owner. They can like to be 15 years and weigh between 9 and 17 pounds.

#7 Ocicat

The Ocicat was created by breeding a Siamese cat and an Abyssinian cat then crossing that with an American Shorthair cat. Basically, the Ocicat is an all-domestic breed of cat which resembles a wild cat but has no wild DNA in its gene pool.

With a coat that can be dotted with tawny, chocolate, cinnamon, blue, lavender or fawn spots, the Ocicat is quite an exotic-looking breed. But there’s nothing wild about him: He’s the result of crossing Abyssinians, Siamese and American Shorthairs.

Ocicats are super social, smart, and strong. They make great pet cats for families with lots of time to play. They can weigh 8 to 12 pounds and can live between 15 and 18 years.

#8 Egyptian Mau

It is believed the Egyptian Mau breed originated in Egypt and probably descended from an African wildcat. In Ancient Egypt, the breed was treasured and worshiped as a god. This cat has also been featured in the movie Cat Woman.

They are the only natural domesticated breed of cat that is spotted, which gives them the look of a wild cat like a Cheetah or Leopard. Their coat comes in either silver, bronze or smoke with a spotted pattern. They have an elegant, athletic body and their back legs are longer than their front legs.

The Egyptian Mau is brilliant, loyal, and very social. This cat has excellent speed and can run up 30 miles per hour. They are small to medium cats, weighing between 7 and 11 pounds and live between 9 and 13 years.

Cats that look like leopards have become very popular among cat owners. Today, breeders are working to cross-breed cats to produce the perfect little leopard that you can enjoy as a house cat. It seems cat lovers want to bring a bit of the wild into their homes, or they just appreciate the beauty of these cats coats.
